One of the things that I was super excited about when we moved into our new building was that I could finally stock a wider selection of books. As the herder responsible for ordering in cool stuff to sell in our gift shop, I have some leeway to pick what I think is important, and for me that is BOOKS! In today’s tech obsessed society, I strongly believe we need to make space for some good ol’ literature! So this week’s blog is going to highlight a few of the awesome books we stock – most are also available to buy through our webshop if you’re not visiting us.

The Dinosaur that Pooped a Reindeer – Tom Fletcher & Dougie Poynter
What kid doesn’t love reindeer and dinosaurs, and even more than that, what kid isn’t entertained by poo?! In this fun Christmas themed adventure there is a good dose of all three!

Reindeer: An Arctic Life – Tilly Smith
Our very own Head Herder Tilly wrote this fantastic book exploring all things reindeer. With decades of memorable stories to draw upon and written in conversational tones, this is a hard book to put down.

Reindeer: A Tale of Nature and Survival in a Changing North – Nancy Langston
Nancy visited us when researching for this book, and there is a nice wee mention of our herd in there. The book is a journey right round the globe, looking at the different ways reindeer and humans have worked together through time: the good and the bad, the successful and disastrous. It taps deep into what reindeer are as a species, what they need to thrive and the incredible adaptations they have made. I learnt a lot about the history of projects to relocate and establish new populations of reindeer in different countries.

Fia and the Last Snow Deer – Eilish Fisher
This poetic book is set in Ireland, and focuses on Fia and her snow (rein)deer Solas. A beautifully written book for teenagers and adults alike.

Hoof Prints: 60 Years of Reindeer in the Cairngorms – Emily Singleton
Emily did an incredible job bringing together the history of the first 60 years of our herd in Scotland in this beautiful coffee-table style book. From looking at the origins of our reindeer, to individual character studies, this is a wonderful book for any reindeer enthusiast.

That’s Not My Reindeer: It’s Body is too Furry – Fiona Watt/Rachel Wells
Part of the well-loved series, who can resist this touchy-feely book featuring the hunt for the right reindeer?! A wonderful gift for all babies and toddlers.

Ten Little Reindeer – Jonny Lambert
A fun countdown from 10 to 1 beautiful reindeer featuring their adventures and exploits, with flaps to lift. Great for kids to read along.

A Year in the Life of Scotland’s Reindeer Photo Book
This gorgeous photo book brings together photos from our archives exploring every aspect of reindeer in a pocket sized format. Perfect as a souvenir or as a stocking filler for anyone who likes reindeer.

So, hopefully there is something there for everyone, because reading has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and reindeer always make the day better – a winning combination!
